Restoring the Spiritual Foundation of the Healing Arts

The following is a report offered by Simone Lake following the METS conference in Redlands last month.
****************************************************************************************************

The METS conference in June 2009 was held at the University of Redlands and was a blessing to all. Faculty and staff were able to connect with students from multiple states and countries. All joining together in this three day workshop, training medical students and staff on principles on whole person care.

The daily conference started with praise and worship with daily workshops including Strengthing the Healers Spiritual Assets, Kingdom Mentality, The Ethical Basis for Spiritual Care and more. Faculty and staff included Doctors specializing in Infectious diseases, internal medicine, endo gastroenterologist, pediatric Neurology and Orthopedics.

Additional Staff included those with M. Div and Theology Professor. Staff, speakers and leaders helped facilitate reflection times and small group discussion as well as spiritual care practicum at Loma Linda Hospital. The workshop ended with a preceptorship option, a Health Student Summer Mission Project, for students to attend an additional 4 weeks and earn CEU credit.

Students were blessed and appreciative of what they learned and were excitied about their experiences with patients during their practicum.

SIMONE'S PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
While serving at Payson Christian Clinic, Dr. Hunt invited me to attend and participate in METS. It was a incredible blessing to serve these students as a group leader assisting them to keep their focus on Christ while they offer Christ to others as the hope to healing, strength, comfort and ultimately salvation. As a recent graduate of seminary receiving a Masters of Theological Studies, I was pleased to see the Kingdom mentality and the focus of God as the main highlight of the conference. I was so proud of my students once we went to the University of Loma Linda. Each of them did a great job in implementing spiritual history and prayer as they participated in the spiritual care practicum. ! am looking forward to the METS in Payson in which I will be participating ...speaking on prayer and leading a group.
